Volunteer Opportunities

The Mental Health Association of Orange County (MHA) a private non profit agency provides programs and services for persons whose lives have been impacted by severe mental illness; such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder and major depression. Programs include; clinical and rehabilitation services, homeless outreach, homeless multi-service center, back to work program, housing assistance, clubhouse programs, SSI benefit assistance, hearing advocacy program, and information and referral.

Opportunities for Involvement

CLUBHOUSE ASSISTANT
Volunteers help staff provide resources, information, and support to clubhouse members and the public over the phone or in person. Volunteers may also participate in groups and recreational activities designed to enhance social and communication skills, such as poetry, reading and writing, and trips to museums and parks. 

CLUBHOUSE REHAB GROUP LEADER
Volunteers provide Psychosocial Rehabilitation support to clubhouse members by facilitating rehab groups designed for adults who are trying to cope with mental illness. Groups meet on a weekly basis and focus on issues such as assertiveness, anger management, developing job skills, health management, etc. 

HEARING ADVOCATES
Advocates fulfill a legally mandated role to ensure that involuntarily detained psychiatrically disabled patients have the opportunity to express their views regarding hospitalization. Advocates review patients' charts, interview patients, and attend probable cause hearings with the patients. Knowledge of mental illness and/or law is preferred.   2-4 hours per week for 6 months commitment needed.

HOMELESS PROGRAM ASSISTANT
Volunteers provide support and assistance to homeless adults suffering from mental illness by planning and leading activities at the Homeless Multi-Service Center. Activities may include crafts, games, exercise, and groups such as self-improvement, health management, etc. 

HOUSING ASSISTANT
Volunteers assist mentally ill adults who are in semi-independent, transitional, or permanent living environments with in home visits and support to newly housed individuals.

PROJECT RETURN FACILITATOR
Volunteers help psychiatrically disabled adults  by offering structure and support in weekly club meetings.  Facilitators help club members gain skills in communicating, self-confidence, and self-esteem while having fun and making friends.  Weekly time commitment is approximately 3 hours.

ROOM AND BOARD VOLUNTEER
The Room and Board Volunteer assists the Housing Program Staff in maintaining the Room and Board referral list.  Duties include conducting Room and Board Inspections, making phone calls to update the information on the list, and assisting in conducting Room and Board Operator Training sessions.  Weekly time commitment is negotiable.  Availability during week is required.
